Jay-z signs Jay Electronica to Roc Nation

NEW YORK — There's a new Jay in the Roc Nation camp.

At an event at downtown New York burlesque venue The Box Friday night, hip-hop kingpin Jay-Z announced that New Orleans lyricist and Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010 candidate Jay Electronica is the latest signee to his Roc Nation label.

"My whole goal is to reintroduce magic to hip hop," Jay said of bringing Electronica into his fold. "We watched this wizard do his thing. Y'all supported him. And he's an official Roc Nation signee."

Rocking a black suit, white shirt and black tie, Electronica performed notable e-bangers "Exhibit A" and "Exhibit C" to the packed house. Although he's characterized by his unique and progressive approach to hip-hop, Jay Elect followed in the tradition of many Hov signees before him and threw up the Roc symbol.

"My name is Jay Electronica and my mama is here so you can't tell me sh--," the MC proclaimed. However, despite the moment of bravado, Jay Elect did politely ask his new boss if he could have the floor.

"Hov, permission to speak freely, sir," he queried.

However, the Brooklyn legend made it clear the night was all about "The Ghost of Christopher Wallace" lyricist.

"This is your show," Jay said. "You better get it."

The announcement comes after Jay Elect spent years building buzz on the underground circuit and snagging the attention of hip-hop luminaries such as Nas and Diddy.

The MC is also the latest MC to join the increasingly diverse Roc Nation family, which counts pint-size, swagger queen Willow Smith and Loud songstress Rihanna among its new addition

Joe Budden Behind the Scenes on Mood Music 4

Joe Budden to me is a success story based on his grind to me. He opened up a lane of not just rhyming but letting the world in on him as a person. Music would be balanced if a majority of these rappers would just open up on just their songs but you know.....they don't. SMH

This is what they did to us.

(CNN) -- The Tuskegee syphilis experiment of the 20th century is often cited as the most famous example of unethical medical research. Now, evidence has emerged that it overlapped with a shorter study, also sponsored by U.S. government health agencies, in which human subjects were unknowingly being harmed by participating in an experiment.

Research from Wellesley College professor Susan Reverby has uncovered evidence of an experiment in Guatemala that infected people with sexually transmitted diseases in an effort to explore treatments.

The U.S. government apologized for the research project on Friday, more than 60 years after the experiments ended. Officials said an investigation will be launched into the matter.

The Tuskegee and the Guatemala studies show what National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins called a "a dark chapter in the history of medicine."

As unethical as the methods were, the basic research questions behind both studies were highly relevant at the time, said Peter Brown, medical anthropologist at Emory University. Research in Guatemala focused on the powers of penicillin; in Tuskegee, researchers wanted to know the natural history of syphilis.

"In a racist context, they thought [syphilis] might be different in African-Americans; the real unethical part in my mind had to do with denial of treatment and, most importantly, the denial of information about the study to the men involved," he said.

In 1926, syphilis was seen as a major health problem, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; in 1928, about 25 percent of black employees at the Delta Pine and Land Company of Mississippi had tested positive for syphilis, according to Tuskegee University. A charity called the Julius Rosenwald Fund came to the U.S. Public Health Service to start a project to improve the health of African-Americans in the South.

But in 1929, the Great Depression began, and the Rosenwald Fund had to cut its funds for the treatment program.

The director of the U.S. Public Health Service, Dr. Taliaferro Clark, proposed salvaging the project by investigating the course of untreated syphilis.

Getting African-Americans to participate was not a challenge; most African-Americans did not have access to medical care at that time and the study provided free health exams, food and transportation, according to Tuskegee University.

It's out there go dig it up.......google it........crumbs.

This is what they do!!!!!!

-- The United States apologized Friday for a 1946-1948 research study in which people in Guatemala were intentionally infected with sexually transmitted diseases.

A statement by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius called the action "reprehensible."

"We deeply regret that it happened, and we apologize to all the individuals who were affected by such abhorrent research practices," the joint statement said. "The conduct exhibited during the study does not represent the values of the United States, or our commitment to human dignity and great respect for the people of Guatemala."

President Barack Obama called his Guatemalan counterpart Friday "offering profound apologies and asking pardon for the deeds of the 1940s," President Alvaro Colom told CNN en Espanol in a telephone interview from Guatemala City.

"Though it happened 64 years ago, it really is a profound violation of human rights," said Colom, who said the report took him by surprise.

Clinton called him on Thursday, he said. "She too offered her apologies," he said, adding that she told him she was ashamed the United States had been involved in the matter.

Seeing the past

Time heals all wounds, still in all some wounds scar. Those that scar are meant to remind you that you survived something that you will carry with you for the rest of your life. I choose to look at my scars and say that they are similar to the stripes of a general. I will walk as a man is supposed to.........head high showing my scars as they are mine. The Most High gave them to me to keep and hold always as mine. I earned them and will never be ashamed of them for they are mine. I looked my fear in the eyes and stared back knowing I am willing to fight to the death to no longer fear. I understand my purpose through the gifts that I received to deliver to the minds that remeber there scars. Just remeber a scar only breaks the skin, never the soul beause it is untouchable.

Pharcyde talks about Dilla!!!!!!!

I'm a fan of anything that talks about the myth of J Dilla since he was such a low key cat. It's funny thinking about the fact that they go in and say even Dilla said ATCQ should've stuck with their original style rather than letting Dilla influence them as he did. Then again, when someone comes with a sound that is so original, the powers that be want to use it first rather than just help it grow.

A song everybody should like

Ceelo cheered me up this fine Saturday morning. After a long night of chilling with mu family and hanging out with my musical family (Villanova) I made it back to my crib at 6:30 am. I was supposed to be up early enough to get with my man DJ June to do some filming but I woke up late, well 11:00 am. Anyway I got a text to go listen to this song and I was so amused I decided to pass it along.

Liberia....Americans are soft (imo)

Cruising through some blogs I ran accross this. It's not for the faint hearted still these guys documented it. It's not a quick video either, so if you want to see it take a minute and view it. All I can say is damn.

Think Twice!!!!

(CNN) -- A decision on who is eligible to run for president in Haiti has been postponed until Friday, leaving hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean and the other presidential hopefuls in limbo, said Berto Dorce, Jean's lawyer.

Haiti's election commission was scheduled to make a decision Tuesday night.

Jean's eligibility was under question after claims that he has not lived in Haiti for five consecutive years before the election, a mandate in the nation's Constitution.

Jean's lawyer said his client meets that criteria.

"His candidacy has been contested and we went to court and proved that he is legally entitled to run for president," Dorce said. "Jean's position is pretty strong. He should be on the list."

Dorce said Jean has been paying taxes in Haiti, which makes him eligible.

"Wyclef has been a shareholder of the local TV corporation called Telemax, and was paying taxes at least for five years; this was sufficient for the Justice of the Peace to issue a certificate of residence for Mr. Wyclef and confirm his residency," Dorce said.

Video: Wyclef wants to be president Jean announced August 5 on "Larry King Live" amid fanfare that he had filled out the paperwork to run for president.

But since then, Jean's announcement has met with some criticism.

Pras, who once performed alongside Jean and Lauryn Hill in the '90s group The Fugees, said he supported Jean's opponent.

Actor Sean Penn, who has lived in Port-au-Prince for months helping displaced Haitians, also questioned whether the Haitian-born musician could make moves to lead the devastated nation.

And now, Jean said he has received multiple death threats.

"We have been getting threats since last night telling me if I know what's good for me, I would get out [of] the country," Jean wrote in an e-mail to CNN late Tuesday.

Jean's lawyer also talked about the alleged threats.

"Wyclef has been repeatedly getting anonymous threats from people who are saying that he should think twice before running for the president. We cannot tell who are sending these threats, but the closer the announcement, the more threats Jean is getting," Dorce said.

Badu with the Bad Ass..(so beautiful)

(CNN) -- Erykah Badu must pay a $500 fine and serve six months on probation for her naked stroll through downtown Dallas, Texas, while making a music video last March, a city official confirmed Tuesday.

Badu reached a plea deal to settle a misdemeanor disorderly conduct citation issued after she released a music video, according to Dallas spokesman Jose Torres.

The singer shed her clothes as she walked through Dealey Plaza until she was nude and then fell near where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Badu said the video was "shot guerrilla style," without a crew and in one take March 17, 2010.

Badu then posted a message on her Twitter account acknowledging that "there were children there." She said she prayed they wouldn't be traumatized by seeing her naked.

It wasn't until several days after the video for the song "Window Seat" was released on March 28 that anyone who witnessed the taping filed a complaint with Dallas Police. Only then did police issue a citation against Badu.

Under the plea agreement, the offense will be erased from Badu's criminal record if she successfully completes the 180 days probation.

"If she violates any law at the city, state or federal level, a motion to adjudicate (seeking to revoke probation) will be filed," Torres said. "If the motion to adjudicate is granted, Ms. Badu will have a criminal conviction."

Throw back material

Shout out to these two guys. I've been blessed enough to work with both these guys. Al One and Lyrikal Buddah who form Sacred Methods together and they can both do the damn thing on the solo tip. I featured Lyrikal Buddah on a project I did back in the day called The Art of Sampling, Al One was supposed to be on it but for some reason or another that never materialized but I still named the instrumental track after him because he was supposed to be on sh*t (lol). I went on and was able to produce two joints for Lyrikal Buddah and look forward to working with him in the future so stay tuned.

Back On It

Yeah, I know....I haven't been on it like I should. Save me the talk because I can read some of my first posts and clearly see my progress on the blog has been like that of an attic on the street with the dope fiend lean.

It's a bit of a crossroads for me because I wonder where all this is going to take your boy, but now is grind time. The release date for the album will be a cool one for me seeing as I will release it on my birthday. Another reason I'm back on it is because my man DJ June made it back from overseas and he's pretty much been one of the motivational cats in my corner. So shout out to him and the rest of the crew.

There's more in store but for now here's an unreleased joint. I'm out.

Been a Minute

The albums complete...ehhhh.... maybe not entirely but for the most part. I'm trying to decide if one song makes it on the album or if I just let it be what it is. In either case many things have changed since I last blogged.

I'm pretty much not liking me NOT being on the blog thing like I should be,.... but....no one man can do everything.

In either way, some people relate to giving your all to something and knowing you set your expectations so high for yourself you start to second quess what you have given your all to. We live, we grow, we get better!

So, when is your best? Who knows and who cares? Life is bigger than our wanting to say I did it the best. I just wanna know that when I did it...people who hear it know that I gave my all.

Saying Goodbye to a Legend

The whole Guru passing saddens me to such a degree that things are getting clearer. A numb feeling of understanding the truth of a legacy. Not just Gang Starr's, Guru's or Primo, but to hip hop's.

It starts off for me back in the late 80's when I first heard Gang Starr. The first video I saw was "Manifest" and I was a little confused at first. I'm not really sure as to why I felt confused but I listened and said "eh, okay it's alright I'll keep my ear on em." Mind you I was a shorty then no more than maybe 10 at the time.
To clarify..... the confusion made sense later because I understood that the first time I heard them, I knew it wasn't the normal hip hop I'd heard before. I would later learn they would be greats, that they would stand apart from the hip hop movement and be pioneers.

I grew with them partying to "Dwyck" and watching my man Scriv catch the hip hop holy ghost when it came on. "Ex Girl to the Next Girl" molded my insights to the dealings of women when I didn't understand them. "Soliloquy of Chaos" made me understand that my favorite artists could get killed doing something that brought others joy.

"Did you come to see me, or to the stupid nigga play-offs
Killing you and killing me it's the soliloquy of chaos"...Guru!

When I came of age doing my thing I was compared to Guru..mostly the voice. ;)
I didn't like the comparison because I didn't want anybody comparing me to anybody.
I felt like I was me he was him, but then I began to listen to my music and say damn, ok I do sound like this guy..whatever. I was still new to doing my thing so I didn't sweat it I just did me because I knew we were different, people just found my voice reminded them of Guru.

I'd been a fan of the man we came to love as Baldhead Slick. He wrote rhymes that taught the black youth to be positive, to think, to grow, to teach, and to learn. I've seen alot of things going down while listening to the Gang Starr discography. I've driven away from shoot-outs while Full Clip was playing. I macked this cutie while Discipline was playing at a club. I realized hip hop made it when I heard Royalty on the radio in the middle of the day. Last but not least Manifest was a song that I later realized fathered my early rhymes (you get my point).

How do you salute a great rapper when he can't see it? How do you say man we miss you when he can't hear it. How can we show love when he can't feel it? It's crazy when I think to myself...there really will never ever be another Gang Starr album or song for that matter. They were a great group and nobody could hold down Primo producing an entire album like Guru. People may say Jeru did, and he did. People may say Group Home and they did depending on who you talk to. But we are talking about 20 years of holding down Primo. If Primo is who he is and he did all the albums for Guru what does that say about Guru.

I never thought about it until Guru passed. He was the Illest Brother to rep for one of the illest producers and dj's the game ever saw. Together they made Gang Starr and if hip hop is a body they are definitely one of the main arteries.

Rest in peace Guru. It's a shame that we humans never cherish anything until we can no longer be with it. I'll say goodbye to a legend by doing what I do best. Writing!!!! Goodbye holmes, may the world know that we needed you brother and you served your people well.

Day One In A New Year

Happy new year to all my fam!!!

With everyone making new resolutions and saying this is the year to do what we came to do one can only sense the power of the people making a mark. This will be one of those years that's my prediction.

I'm putting the final touches on my album and I look forward to sharing it with world. I'm looking forward to getting back on stage and doing what I do. I miss feeling the energy you pull from the crowd. I miss giving them that energy back and all around having fun.

I'm looking forward to working with new artists this year and making some bangers for them so we can shake the industry up. I have a lot of projects to hit the world with this year. So in the words of Jamie Foxx playing Ray Charles..."I'ma make it do what it do"
